Editing the Black Dress: Lifting the Midtones for High Resolution

Black clothing in anime can often look flat, "dead," and completely undefined on digital screens, especially on mobile. If you just leave it as-is, it looks like a black hole in the middle of your wallpaper where no light can escape. To fix this for professional 4K displays, I use the "Levels" and "Curves" adjustments in Photoshop. I lift the black point slightly so it becomes a very dark charcoal grey, which reveals the beautiful line art, the intricate folds in her dress, and the texture of the fabric. This adds "volume" and a 3D feel to her design. It makes the character feel real.

Then, I paint in Rim Lighting by hand. Since her dress is black, I can use almost any color for the backlight to create a different mood for the wallpaper. I usually go with a deep crimson red or a soft purple to match her eyes and the handles of her golden stiletto needles. This separation from the background prevents her from looking like a "floating head" and adds a nice menacing, powerful aura. I also sharpen her golden needles to a razor edge using a "High Pass" mask, making them the most lethal-looking part of the image. It's about the tools of the trade.
